Minnie Edna Baker, 97, of Beckley, died June 17, 2013. Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley. Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.


David Lawrence Bruner


Mr. David Lawrence Bruner, 57, of South Charleston, formerly of Kanawha City, passed away June 18, 2013, at home.


David was employed with Mullin Plumbing. He was certified in HVAC and was a licensed electrician. He also had his ASE certification. David was a graduate of Charleston High School and West Virginia University. He was an avid dirt bike rider. He enjoyed playing tennis, photography and was an auto mechanic.


The family would like to say a special thank you to the Mullin Plumbing family and Hospice for everything you did for David and his family.


He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Kay Fox Bruner.


He is survived by his wife, Debbra Bruner; father, Harry C. Bruner Sr.; siblings, Harry C. Bruner Jr., Kathy Ruth and husband, Dick Bruner and William R. and wife, Kelly Bruner; six nieces and nephews; one great-niece; three pets, Khufu, Miss Kitty and Gracie; and two lifelong friends, David Bird and George Adkins.


A tribute to the life of Mr. David Bruner will be noon Friday, June 21, at Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jess Inclenrock officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.


The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Gary Lee Floyd


Gary Lee Floyd of Jodie passed away June 12, 2013, at UMC Hospital in Jackson, Miss. He was 32 years old.


Gary was born January 8, 1982, in Charleston, to Eugene Gary Floyd and Evelyn Kay Hartley. Gary graduated from Gauley Bridge High School and received a college degree in forestry. He moved to Brandon, Miss., where he had a career in hotel maintenance management and also had his own heating and cooling business. Gary had a passion for life that surpassed many others. He loved music, especially the guitar, drawing, four-wheeling and river rafting. He was always up for anything and was always the life of the party, but the real love of Gary's life was his son. Keaton was Gary's heart.


Gary is survived by his son, Keaton Hartley Floyd; his parents, Eugene Gary Floyd and wife, Helen Floyd and Evelyn Kay Hartley; his sisters and their spouses, Tina Marie Hartley Graham and Chris Graham, Bobbi Lea Bess and Philip Evans and Autumn Marie Floyd; his grandmother, Margaret Morris; and his nieces and nephews, James Graham, Jamila Foster, Alyssa Bess and Alexis Evans.


Gary's ashes will be released at The Turn in Jodie on Thursday, June 20, at noon, as were his wishes.


He will be missed by many, but forgotten by none.


Ruby A. Given


Ruby A. Given, 77, of Cowen, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013, at Summersville Regional Medical Center. She was born September 10, 1935, in Zela, to Patrick and Vesta Hughes Williams. She lived most of her life in Webster County. She was a homemaker and she enjoyed flowers.


Ruby is survived by her sons, Roger (Karen) Given of Cowen and Dwight (Susan) Given of Milton; daughter, Becky Chapman of Cowen; brothers, John Williams of Elkhart, Ind. and Jim Williams of Newport News, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack Given; son, Gary Given; and grandson, Joshua "Josh" Given.


Friends may join the family for visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Adams-Reed Funeral Home, Cowen.


Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 21, at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Lovely officiating. Interment will follow in Hughes Cemetery, Zela.


Mary C. Henderson


Mary Catherine Henderson, 89, of South Charleston, passed away Monday June 17, 2013, at her residence.


She was born November 5, 1923, in Morgantown, to the late Arthur I. and Rissa Cross Clawges. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billie Francis Henderson; infant sister, Betty Jane; brothers, Paul, Robert, Arthur I. Jr. and Russell; and sisters, Marie and Virta.


Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church, South Charleston, where she was active in many church circles during her life. She attended West Virginia University and began her working career as a switchboard operator for Bell Systems in Morgantown during World War II, where she met Billie Henderson, later marrying in 1946. She enjoyed the beauty of flowers and had many talents arranging them into beautiful displays, which she did often by participating in numerous garden clubs throughout her life.


Surviving are her son, Roy Alan Henderson (Debbie) of Glenville; daughters, Nancy H. Brumley of South Charleston and Brenda H. Brammer (Wesley) of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren, R. Christopher Henderson of St. Albans and Mary E. Brumley of Savannah, Ga.; great-grandson, Coleman Wyant Henderson of St. Albans; and special nieces, Betty Jo Spivey of Williamsburg, Va. and Janis Lewis of Sunrise Beach, Mo.


In lieu of visitation, friends and loved ones are encouraged to celebrate Mary's love of family by spending a little extra time with a loved one. There will be a private family service at Greenwood Cemetery, Sistersville.

Offie Wayne Miller, 92, of Leroy, died June 16, 2013, at his home after an extended illness. Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.


Jess E. Petry


Jess E. Petry, 82, of Cabin Creek, passed away June 17, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness.


Jess was born July 9, 1930, to the late Utalka and Jess Petry. Jess was known as the "washer man." He loved working on small appliances and woodworking. Jess was also a coal miner.


Left to cherish his memory are his loving children, Tammy Rogers, Dave, Carlos and Richard Petry; sisters, Madeline Smith, Violet Reese and Phyllis Hanshaw; brother, Sammy Petry; grandsons, Hunter and Keyton; granddaughter, Melissa; and great-granddaughter, Micah.


The family would like to thank all of the family, friends, Hubbard HospiceCare, Amy Greer and Bob Schacht for their support.


Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank, with Pastor George Ocheltree officiating. Burial will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.


A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

John Allen Pringle


Mr. John Allen Pringle, 70, of Liberty, passed away June 18, 2013, at CAMC Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.


He was retired from Rover Construction; a member of Local No. 1353; a Navy veteran; and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. John wanted to tell everyone that, "he loved everyone and he loved Jesus."


He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Hanna Pringle and sister, Janet Pringle.


John is survived by his wife, Barbara Ranson Pringle; children, Vicki and husband, Mark Arthur, Lorrie Dworsky, Anita Lynn and husband, Curtis Cheeks, Angela and husband, Charlie Witt and Robert Pringle; brother, Joe Pringle; and sisters, Mary Jordan, Theresa Persinger, Anita Goff and Leah Ann Reid. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


A tribute to the life of Mr. John Pringle will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Ralph Ranson and Father Joe Tuscan officiating. Burial will follow in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens.


The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.

William Eugene Russell


William Eugene Russell, 70, of St. Albans, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his home.


Born January 7, 1943, in St. Albans, William was a son of the late John and Donnie Lovejoy Russell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Linda Hunt Russell; sisters, Geraldine Rogers, Vada Alford and Connie Justice; brother, Charles Ervin Russell; great-grandson, Donavon McCallister; and good friend, Linda Payne.


He was a mechanic for the city of St. Albans and a Baptist by faith.


He is survived by his daughter, Robin Peck (Robert) of St. Albans; sons, Dayton Russell (Denise) and Jonathan Russell (Kristie), all of St. Albans; sister, Ella Loveless of St. Albans; brother, Ronnie Russell of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren, Melinda Jenkins, Ashley Harmon, Jared Russell, Chasity Russell, Tyler Russell and Mason Russell; great-grandchildren, Dominick Hamler, Parker Fisher and Haylee McCallister; several nieces and nephews; and his furry friend, Emma.


Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Ave., St. Albans, with the Rev. Mike Hager officiating. Burial will be in Tucker Cemetery, Scott Depot.


Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Joel Alan Samples


Joel Alan Samples, 74, of Elkview, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston following a short illness.


Joe, a U.S. Air Force veteran, was retired from the State Division of Highways and was a former railroad employee in Cheyenne, Wyo. He was also a huge NASCAR fan and an airplane enthusiast.


Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Cleabert Russell and Evelyn Marie (Harper) Samples; brother, Dan Samples; and sister, Jennifer Samples-Campbell.


Survivors include his wife, Nancy Samples; daughter, Tomi Walters of Cross Lanes; son, Alan Samples of Lakeland, Fla.; mother of his children, Barbara "Bobbie" Samples; brother, Doug Samples of Clendenin; grandchildren, Sasha, Hanna and Layne; great-grandchild, Liam; and a host of other family members and friends.


Joe's funeral service will be 5 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with the Rev. Lee Swor officiating. Burial will be at Harper Cemetery, Corton.


His family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Katie Shamblin


Katie Shamblin, 19, of Charleston, passed away unexpectedly on June 15, 2013.


Katie loved to take pictures and was very creative and artistic. She loved snowboarding, especially at Snowshoe, and enjoyed running. Katie was a hard worker, always helpful and never met a stranger.


She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Vivian Stowers and great-grandmother, Juanita Stone.


Survivors include her loving mother, Jodie M. Stowers of Charleston; father, Todd Shamblin of Charleston; sister, Haley Grace Shamblin of Charleston; grandfather, Jimmy E. Stowers of Charleston; great-grandmother, Thelma Stowers of Charleston; special aunts and uncles, Geneva Surface of Charleston, Jimmy E. Stowers II of Kentucky and Michael and Joan Stone of Malden; and companion, Jordan Wiseman of South Charleston. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins left to mourn her passing.


A celebration of life will be held Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m. at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, with the Rev. William K. Berry officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Virginia Lee Spence


Virginia Lee "Sis" Spence, 90, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at Teays Valley Genesis Center after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Elizabeth and William L. Wintz; brother, William D. Wintz; and grandson, Charles Trevor Smith.


She is survived by her daughter, Dottie (Charlie) Smith of Morristown, Tenn.; granddaughter, Patricia (Chris) Brooks; great-granddaughter, Charleigh; nieces, Julie Kiff, Cheryl Withrow, Billie Wood and Bobbie Beddow; and special friend, Peggy Kuhl.


She retired from Marshall University after 35 years of service. Her house on the corner of 21st Street and 3rd Avenue in Nitro was famous for the holiday decorations she loved so much. She was well known for the hundreds of cemetery floral arrangements she made for holidays. She was a member of Nitro First Presbyterian Church.


The family would like to thank the staff at Genesis Health Care System, Teays Valley and Kanawha Valley Hospice Care for the compassionate and exemplary care she received during her illness.


A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Cooke Funeral Home on 20th Street in Nitro with Pastor Cheryl Withrow officiating.

Lois Louise Thornton


Lois Louise Thornton, 89, of Liberty, passed away Monday, June 17, 2013, at Hubbard Hospice House West at Thomas Memorial Hospital following a long illness. She was a lifelong homemaker and attended Lone Oak Church of God Mission until her declining health would not allow her to do so. Born April 7, 1924, in Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Cleveland Dean and Oma Elizabeth Harrison Dean. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Thornton.


Survivors include her daughter, Louise Thornton of Liberty; sons, Quention Lee Thornton of Ridgeville, S.C. and Leslie William Thornton of Red House; and one brother, Edward L. Dean of Tennessee. She is also survived by four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Delia "Dee Dee" Watkins, 87, formerly of Boomer, W.Va., was called to be with our Lord and Jesus Christ on Tuesday, June 12, 2013, at Heartland Living and Rehabilitation Center in Greensboro, N.C.


Delia was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church of Harewood, W.Va., where she was an active member until her later years when her health and mobility began to decline.


Delia leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Carrie Peyton; son, Robert (Cheryl) Watkins; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.


Memorial service will be noon Saturday, June 22, at First Baptist of Boomer. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
